| Atlantis safe at home
-- The space shuttle Atlantis and its seven astronauts returned to Earth safely yesterday, ending a two-week mission to deliver an addition to the International Space Station and bring a crew member home from the outpost. Atlantis crossed the Pacific and glided to a stop on a runway at Edwards Air Force Base in California. NASA managers had hoped to land the shuttle in Florida, but bad weather forced them to abandon that plan. "Welcome back," Mission Control told Atlantis. "Congratulations on a great mission." Atlantis' return from NASA's first manned flight of the year was marked by its trademark twin sonic booms that were heard from San Diego to L.A. After deploying its parachute, the shuttle came to rest on the concrete runway under a mostly sunny sky.
Support for stability: SCIE’s response to Care Matters White Paper
The measures reflect many of SCIE's recommendations drawn from work with care-experienced young people, parents, practitioners and researchers. Chair of SCIE, Allan Bowman, welcomed the challenging political initiative of raising the national profile of the lives of children in care. Speaking about the paper, he said that care-experienced young people will particularly benefit from support after the age of 16 and more structured ways of participating in service development. "Young people from care have told us that they want stability, to be listened to, taken seriously, involved fully in decisions about their lives, and helped to become independent adults. High-level support for young people during their transition to adulthood is vital to build the necessary resilience, self-esteem and empowerment to progress with confidence.
Parents ultimately care for, train the dog
My husband and I have been unrelenting in our decision against the request. My husband doesn't want a dog barking all the time and jumping up on people, and I don't like dog hair on everything. We don't live in the country where we could keep a dog outside, either. Lately, however, I'm wondering whether maybe we're making a mistake by not allowing the girls the experience of owning a dog. My husband and I both enjoyed having dogs growing up. Too soon our children (we also have a son, age 11, and another daughter, 8) will be grown and gone. Do you have any suggestions for a dog that is good with kids, easy-going, easy to train, doesn't shed (much) and is medium-sized? I'd appreciate any advice you can give us. Thank you. .
