While the World Series of Poker's "Big Game" got underway with the start of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E tournament, 620 players took to the felt to test their skills in a different kind of mixed game tournament in the $1,500 Mixed Hold'em Event #40. Despite not having the elite status of the H.O.R.S.E tournament, the Mixed Hold'em event still managed to bring out some of the game's bigger names as J.C. Tran, Shannon Elizabeth, Joe Sebok, Young Phan, Eric Froehlich, James Van Alstyne, Noah Boeken, Phil Gordon, Nam Le, Humberto Brenes, Clonie Gowen, Jeffrey Lisandro, Thomas Walhroos and Juha Helppi all saw action on Day One. .
Fall television schedule looks to have more misses than hits
If you believe blogs, letters to the editor and the deafening silence around the water cooler, the networks tripped, stumbled and fell when they cobbled together their fall lineups. In addition to fans still whining about the demise of "Jericho," blogs are currently bloated with viewers complaining about the lack of any good sitcoms, the proliferation of reality shows and the tendency of networks to cancel shows after just a few airings. Many have now sworn not to watch new shows until their sophomore season, the better to avoid the disappointment of cancellation. You might think it a national trend, but how then to explain the first-year triumph of "Heroes," "Ugly Betty," "Shark" and "Brothers and Sisters." (Evidently, the millions of people watching those shows aren't bloggers.) Still, the networks should take note.
Eight ways to be a good father
Psychiatrist Dilek Krcaolu, who has specialized in parental education for the last 10 years asks the following question of fathers-to-be: Do you really want to be a father?
